Tame Impala – Currents

Back in Australlia with more psychedelia. Tame Impala kicked off as a project in 2007 with Kevin Parker writing, recording and producing the albums, and a live band bringing them to life on stage. He shares our fetish for lo-fi vibes, twisting in pop and whatever Bee Gees sound like when you’re on mushrooms – his own words not ours.

Currents is the third studio album from the band, and took three years to produce before being released to the world in 2015. If you’re not familar with Tame Impala, this is your perfect intro to their sound. It draws on influences from R&B to disco, so there’s something for everyone here. Our favourites include The Less I Know The Better and The Moment, but of course you have to listen from beginning to end.

This album feels painstakingly constructed yet completely unrestricted, flowing freely and exploring the sounds and space it creates. Parker describes a story of personal change from acceptance, taking us on a journey from “they say people never change, but that’s bullshit, they do”, to the reflective New Person, Same Old Mistakes – the title says it all. It seems Parker is saying that no matter what happens, just keep living and accept it. Whatever “it” is…
