Psychedelic Porn Crumpets – And Now for the Whatchamacallit

We just can’t help ourselves with yet another brilliant band from Oz (Australia). This is unsurprisingly more psych-rock from the aptly named Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Stand aside dream-pop, this is heavy hitting rock with big riffs, overdrive and the occasional airy interludes. Oh. yes.

Starting out with singer and guitarist Jack McEwan, the band formed in 2014, releasing albums in 2016 and 2017, before their latest masterpiece, And Now for the Watchamacallit.

There are five “Crumpets” in total, with many more layers of guitars than humanly possible. Every instrument has it’s own sound encompassing every pedal combo under the sun. It packs a chunky punch of sound. The band admit that live their songs can take on a different life to the recorded versions, but the riffs definitely hold true without the multitude of instruments and effects, so no harm done here.

Keen for Kick Ons kicks off with a fat riff and melody which is reflected in the vocals for maximum effect. The sound is perfectly executed. Fields, Woods, Time is a dreamy intermission taking us into Native Tongue which is definitely the more relaxed song from the album. For some plunky guitar soloing, the penultimate Digital Hunger has everything you need. As always, listening to only the whole album in its entirety will give you the full picture.
